Excelsior resident Michelle MacCormick had just weathered a storm in her personal life when she captured this shot of Lake Minnetonka after an early evening thunderstorm. A recent divorce had turned MacCormick’s life upside down.

From the front, 201 Mill St. in Excelsior looks just as it did more than 100 years ago.

It can be daunting to face that stack of books waiting on your nightstand or select a novel from the sea of titles at the store. But with book clubs all around the Lake Minnetonka area, and businesses like The Marsh and The Bookcase right out your door, there’s no need to fret.

Native Americans and early white settlers around Lake Minnetonka knew of the abundant berries, chokecherries, plums and grapes that grew wild along the rich soil of the lake.

Minnetonka’s Kathryn Holmes went from feeling lost, confused and angry to overcoming a devastating condition and writing about her remarkable recovery in her book I Stand with Courage: One Woman’s Journey to Conquer Paralysis.

Tom Rob Smith's debut novel, Child 44, remains to this day one of the best thrillers I have ever read. Exciting, adventuresome, at times disturbing and extraordinarily original, Child 44 is one of those rare debuts that seems impossible to top.

When the Excelsior Fire District formed in the late 1800s, a potential recruit got into the boxing ring to prove he was up to the job. Today, Excelsior firefighters emphasize the power of prevention.

Renowned artist Mark Balma has painted frescos in an Italian church built in 1265, but the latest site for the artist with Lake Minnetonka connections is a small Lutheran church built in 1904 that the city of Stacy, Minn., holds as its only place of worship.

Built to resemble the coolest sleek gray laundry machine you’ve ever seen, the new mobile iPad cart, complete with 30 iPads with apps, was anonymously donated to St.

Long Lake resident Carrie Miller has a love for paper so strong that about five years ago she started Eclectic Paper Designs to create unique gifts and art using her favorite material.

Small-town trick-or-treating returns to Deephaven this Halloween as part of the Cottagewood General Store’s seasonal closing.

Is there an app for that? Sure—an appetizer, that is—and with it, a well-matched glass of wine. Chefs who value first impressions strut their stuff with starters, which explains why a restaurant’s appetizers can be more interesting than the entrées.

If cows could type, what would they say? That’s the silly question answered in the beloved children’s book, Click Clack Moo, by Doreen Cronin. The playwright who adapted this whimsical book imagined a series of projections to be used in the production of the play.

Looking to shake up your Halloween routine? Sure, there’s the costumes and trick-or-treating, but what to do beforehand? It falls on a Wednesday this year, so throw together a family dinner or neighborhood bash with our version of this haunted holiday two ways.

This past summer, the $10 million Trails of Orono senior housing development opened. Located minutes from downtown Wayzata along the Luce Line Trail, this one-of-a-kind establishment paints a new picture of the way seniors can savor their days.
